Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Safari and 2002 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. In order to assemble the linear shift assembly, refer to Linear Shift Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle  .
  2. Install the linear shift assembly to the steering column.
  3. Install the linear shift assembly mounting screws. Tighten the linear shift assembly mounting screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  4. Connect the park lock cable (1) to the lock module.
  5. Adjust the park lock cable in the following way:
    1. Use the shift lever clevis to put the column in the PARK position.
    2. Put the ignition switch in the accessory position.
    3. Unlock the adjuster ring (1) on the park lock cable assembly with J 41396 
    4. Pull on the cable until the park lock latch contacts the shift lever clevis. Release the cable.
    5. Lock the adjuster ring (1) securely in place on the park lock cable assembly with J41396

  6. Inspect the park lock cable using the following steps:
    1. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF-LOCK position. The shift lever clevis should not be able to shift out of the PARK position.
    2. Turn the key to the RUN position and put the shift lever clevis in the NEUTRAL position.
    3. With the shift lever clevis in the NEUTRAL position the lock cylinder should not be able to go into the OFF-LOCK position.
    4. Put the shift lever clevis into the PARK position.
    5. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF-LOCK position and then remove the key.
  7. Install the shift lever. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement - On Vehicle  .
  8. Connect the shift cable to the linear shift assembly.
  9. Connect the automatic transmission shift lock control actuator to the linear shift assembly.
  10. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle  .
  11. Enable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
