Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Safari and 2002 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
  3. Position the steering wheel half way between the upper and lower tilt stops.
  4. Remove the lower steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle  .
  5. Remove the upper steering column trim cover (2) mounting screws (1).

  7. Lift the upper steering column trim cover to gain access to the lock cylinder access hole.
  8. Using a bent tip awl, insert the tip into the ignition lock cylinder access hole.

  9. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the START position.
  10. Using the bent tip awl, push down on the ignition lock cylinder retaining pin.

  12. Release the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position.
  13. Remove the ignition lock cylinder from the lock module by pulling the ignition lock cylinder away from the steering column.
