Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra and 2002 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Did you perform the diagnostic system check? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Perform the transmission fluid checking procedure. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Was the fluid checking procedure performed? If so, go to next step. If not, see appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
  3. Install a scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Before clearing the DTCs, use the scan tool to record the failure records. Using the CLEAR INFO function erases the failure records from the PCM. Record the failure records. Clear the DTCs. Select Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) on the scan tool. Drive the vehicle and observe the scan tool for one of the following conditions:
    • No transmission fluid temperature change.
    • An unrealistic transmission fluid temperature change of greater than 36°F (20°C) 14 times in 7 seconds.

Did either of the fail conditions occur? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .

  4. Did the scan tool display an unrealistic transmission fluid temperature change? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  6 .
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the transmission in-line 20-way harness connector. Additional DTCs may set. Using the Connector Test Adapter Kit (J-35616-A), install a 12-volt test light between terminals "L" and "M" of the engine side of the transmission in-line 20-way harness connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. Does the scan tool TFT display an unrealistic transmission fluid temperature change? If so, go to step  7 . If not, go to step  8 .
  6. Record the scan tool TFT display from step  4 . Turn ignition off. Disconnect the transmission in-line 20-way harness connector. Additional DTCs may set. Turn ignition on, engine off. Is the scan tool TFT display the same as in step  4 ? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  8 .
  7. Replace the PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace the TFT sensor. See TFT SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the replacement? If so, go to next step.
  9. Perform the following procedure to verify the repair:
    • Select DTC.
    • Select CLEAR INFO.
    • The transmission fluid temperature changes by more than 5°F (3°C) after the engine has been running for 30 seconds.
    • For a period of at least 30 seconds, the transmission fluid temperature does not change more than 36°F (20°C) within 0.2 seconds.
    • Select SPECIFIC DTC.
    • Enter DTC P0711.

Has the test run and passed? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step  1 .
