Crankshaft Balancer: Removal

  1. Disconnect battery negative cables. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right front fender wheelhouse panel. Remove starter motor and set aside. See appropriate STARTERS article in 2002 STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. The wiring to starter does not require removal.
  2. Install Flywheel Holding Tool (J-44643) in starter motor opening in order to hold engine from turning. Lower vehicle. Remove upper and lower fan shroud.
  3. Remove crankshaft balancer bolt. Remove crankshaft balancer. The balancer is a slip fit and should slide off. Inspect pin in crankshaft for wear. The pin is worn if during removal, the balancer could be turned side to side. Replace pin if worn. Clean crankshaft balancer in cleaning solvent and air dry.
  4. Inspect for cracks, belt drive surface damage, or other damage to crankshaft balancer. Inspect crankshaft balancer keyway for crankshaft pin wear. Replace crankshaft balancer if damage is found.
