Valve Clearance Adjustment

- Remove fan clutch. See FAN BLADE ASSEMBLY . Remove both upper valve rocker arm covers. Rotate engine in normal direction and put No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Number one cylinder is on right side front. While turning the engine, watch the intake valve to open and close. Align mark on crankshaft balancer with pointer on engine. See Fig 1.
- Loosen valve clearance adjusting screws for valve being adjusted. Insert feeler gauge between tip of rocker arm and valve bridge. Adjust intake and exhaust valve clearance to 0.012 in. (0.3 mm) with engine cold. See Fig 2. Shown are valves that can be adjusted at No. 1 of compression stroke TDC. See Fig 3. Tighten valve adjusting screw lock nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m).
- Turn engine one turn in normal direction and put No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) of exhaust stroke to adjust remaining valve clearance. While turning engine watch exhaust valve to open and close. Align mark on crankshaft balancer with pointer on engine. See Fig 1.
- Loosen valve clearance adjusting screws for valves being adjusted. Insert feeler gauge between tip of rocker arm and valve bridge. Adjust valve clearance to 0.0112 in. (0.3 mm) with engine cold. Shown are valves that can be adjusted at No. 1 EXHAUST stroke TDC. See Fig 3. Tighten valve clearance adjusting screw lock nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m).
- Install both upper valve rocker arm covers. See VALVE ROCKER ARM COVERS . Install fan clutch. See FAN BLADE ASSEMBLY .
