Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    CAUTION: Refer to SIR CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING SYSTEM in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the tilt lever from steering column. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  4. IMPORTANT: You must check for 2 pan head tapping screws (1) in the lower trim before removal.

  5. If necessary remove the pan head tapping screws (1) that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  6. If no screws are present, gently unsnap the lower trim cover from the upper trim cover.

  8. Tilt the trim cover down and slide it back in order to disengage the locking tabs.
  9. Remove the lower steering column trim cover.
  10. Slide the shift lever seal up the shift lever.
  11. IMPORTANT: You must check for 1 TORX head screw (1) in the upper trim cover (2) before removal.

  12. If necessary, remove the screw (1) that retains the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  13. If no screw is present, gently unsnap the upper steering column trim cover.
  14. Remove the upper steering column trim cover.
