Without DRL

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Savana Special, 2002 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2002 GMC Savana, and 2002 Chevrolet Chevy Express. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The brake warning indicator remains illuminated when the ignition is ON, with the engine OFF if the vehicle is equipped with a Power Brake Booster Fluid Flow Alarm (UJ1). If the vehicle being serviced is so equipped, the engine must be started each time this diagnostic table instructs you to turn ON the ignition.
  1. Did you review the SYMPTOMS - HYDRAULIC BRAKE? If so go to next step. If not, go to SYMPTOMS - HYDRAULIC BRAKE  .
  2. Turn OFF the ignition. Ensure the park brake is released. Turn ON the ignition while observing the brake warning indicator. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn OFF? If so, condition is intermittent. Go to INTERMITTENT  . If not, go to next step.
  3. Install a scan tool. Select the 4WAL 3 SENSOR CURRENT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES function on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display DTC C0286 AND another ABS disabling DTC? If so, go to Anti-Lock Brake System. If not, go to next step.
  4. Select the 4WAL 3 SENSOR DATA DISPLAY function on the scan tool. Observe the BRAKE WARNING LAMP status. Does the scan tool display ON? If so go to next step. If not go to step  8 .
  5. Disconnect the brake pressure differential switch harness connector. See COMBINATION VALVE  . Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF? If so, go to step  18 . If not go to next step.
  6. Turn OFF the ignition. Reconnect the brake pressure differential switch harness connector. Disconnect the 10-way EBCM harness connector. Turn ON the ignition. Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF? If so go to step  13 . If not go to next step.
  7. Repair the short to ground in the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit. After repairs are complete, go to step  19 .
  8. Disconnect the park brake warning lamp switch harness connector. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH  . Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF? If so, go to step  15 . If not, go to next step.
  9. Turn OFF the ignition. Remove the instrument panel cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER REPLACEMENT . Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit and the brake warning indicator control circuit. Turn ON the ignition. Does the test lamp remain illuminated? If so go to next step. If not go to step  14 .
  10. Turn OFF the ignition. Reconnect the IPC harness connector. Disconnect the ignition switch harness connector. See Steering Columns. Test the park brake switch signal circuit (ignition switch) for a short to ground. Is the park brake switch signal circuit shorted to ground within the ignition switch? If so go to step  16 . If not go to next step.
  11. NOTE: For vehicles not equipped with Power Brake Booster Fluid Flow Alarm (UJ1), go to step  12 .
  12. Turn OFF the ignition. Reconnect the ignition switch harness connector. Disconnect connector C208. Turn ON the ignition. Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF? If so go to step  17 . If not go to next step.
  13. Repair the short to ground in the brake warning indicator control circuit. After repairs are complete, go to step  19 .
  14. Following EBCM replacement, use the scan tool to perform the Tire Size Calibration procedure. Replace the EBCM. See Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) Replacement in Anti-Lock Brake System. After repairs are complete, go to step  19 .
  15. Replace the instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER REPLACEMENT . After repairs are complete, go to step  19 .
  16. Replace the park brake warning lamp switch. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH  . After repairs are complete, go to step  19 .
  17. Replace the ignition switch. See IGNITION & KEY ALARM SWITCH ASSEMBLY . After repairs are complete, go to step  19 .
  18. Test the brake warning indicator control circuit for a short to ground between connector C208 and the in line diode D202. Did you find and correct the condition? If so go to step  19 . If not, go to BRAKE WARNING ALARM ALWAYS ON  .
  19. Replace the brake pressure differential switch. See COMBINATION VALVE  . After repairs are complete, go to next step.
  20. Turn OFF the ignition for 5 seconds. Turn ON the ignition while observing the brake warning indicator. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn OFF? If so then system is okay. If system is not okay, go to step  2 .
