With DRL

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Savana Special, 2002 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2002 GMC Savana, and 2002 Chevrolet Chevy Express. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Did you review the SYMPTOMS - HYDRAULIC BRAKE and perform the necessary inspections? If so, go to next step. If not, go to SYMPTOMS - HYDRAULIC BRAKE  .
  2. Turn OFF the ignition. Ensure the park brake is released. Turn ON the ignition while observing the brake warning indicator. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn OFF? If so, condition is intermittent. Go to INTERMITTENT  . If not, go to next step.
  3. Install a scan tool. Select the 4WAL 3 SENSOR CURRENT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES function on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display DTC C0286 AND another ABS disabling DTC? If so, go to Anti-Lock Brake System. If not, go to next step.
  4. Select the 4WAL 3 SENSOR DATA DISPLAY function on the scan tool. Observe the BRAKE WARNING LAMP status. Does the scan tool display ON? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  8 .
  5. Disconnect the brake pressure differential switch harness connector. See COMBINATION VALVE  . Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF? If so, go to step  22 . If not, go to next step.
  6. Turn OFF the ignition. Reconnect the brake pressure differential switch harness connector. Disconnect the 10-way EBCM harness connector. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK BRAKES SYSTEM article. Turn ON the ignition. Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF? If so, go to step  17 . If not, go to next step.
  7. Repair the short to ground in the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit. After repairs are complete, go to step  23 .
  8. Disconnect the park brake warning lamp switch harness connector. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH  . Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF? If so, go to step  19 . If not, go to next step.
  9. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the daytime running lamps control module harness connector. Turn ON the ignition. Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  13 .
  10. Turn OFF the ignition. Test the park brake switch signal circuit for a short to ground. Is the park brake switch signal circuit shorted to ground? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  14 .
  11. Disconnect the ignition switch harness connector. Test the park brake switch signal circuit (NOT the ignition switch side) for a short to ground. Is the park brake switch signal circuit shorted to ground? If so go to next step. If not go to step  20 .
  12. Repair the short to ground in the park brake switch signal circuit. After repairs are complete, go to step  23 .
  13. NOTE: For vehicles not equipped with Power Brake Booster Fluid Flow Alarm (UJ1), go to step  15 .
  14. Turn OFF the ignition. Reconnect the Daytime Running Lamps control module harness connector. Disconnect connector C208. Turn ON the ignition. Does the brake warning indicator turn OFF? If so, go to step  21 . If not, go to step  15 .
  15. Replace the daytime running lamps control module.
    1. Remove the instrument panel driver knee bolster panel.
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the DRL module. See Fig 1 .
    After repairs are complete, go to step  23 .
  16. Turn OFF the ignition. Reconnect connector C208 if step  13 was performed. Remove the instrument panel cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER REPLACEMENT . Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit and the brake warning indicator control circuit at the instrument panel cluster harness connector. Turn ON the ignition. Does the test lamp remain illuminated? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  18 .
  17. Repair the short to ground in the brake warning indicator control circuit. After repairs are complete, go to step  23 .
  18. Following EBCM replacement, use the scan tool to perform the Tire Size Calibration procedure. Replace the EBCM. See Electronic Brake Control Module Replacement in Anti-Lock Brake System. After repairs are complete, go to step  23 .
  19. Replace the instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER REPLACEMENT . After repairs are complete, go to step  23 .
  20. Replace the park brake warning lamp switch. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH  . After repairs are complete, go to step  23 .
  21. Replace the ignition switch. See IGNITION & KEY ALARM SWITCH ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT . After repairs are complete, go to step  23 .
  22. Test the brake warning indicator control circuit for a short to ground between connector C208 and the in line diode D202. Did you find and correct the condition? If so go to step  23 . If not, go to BRAKE WARNING ALARM ALWAYS ON  .
  23. Replace the brake pressure differential switch. See COMBINATION VALVE  . After repairs are complete, go to next step.
  24. Turn OFF the ignition for 5 seconds. Turn ON the ignition while observing the brake warning indicator. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn OFF? If so, system is okay. If system is not okay, go to step  2 .
