Measuring Cylinder Bore Taper

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora and 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Measure the cylinder bore along the thrust surfaces (perpendicular to the crankshaft centerline) at 5 mm (0.20 in) below the deck surface and record your measurement.
  2. Measure the cylinder bore along the thrust surfaces (perpendicular to the crankshaft centerline) at 102 mm (4.00 in) below the deck surface and record your measurement.
  3. Calculate the difference between the two measurements. The result will be the cylinder taper.
  4. Compare your results with the Engine Mechanical Specifications . If the cylinders exceed the specifications, replace the cylinder block. There are no oversized pistons and rings available for service.
