Removal Procedure

CAUTION:
The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.
- Install the J 42640 in the steering column lower access hole.
- Remove the protective cover from the steering column under the Instrument Panel to gain access to the bolt.
- Remove the bolt (3) retaining the intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column (1).

WARNING: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed. - Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands.
- Mark the Intermediate Shaft to Steering Gear alignment before removal.
- Position the intermediate shaft cover (1) for access to the lower shaft pinch bolt. Turn the steering wheel to allow access to the pinch bolt.
- Remove the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) from the steering gear stub shaft.
- Remove the intermediate shaft from the vehicle.
