Park Brake Cable (Rear Drum): Removal

  1. Raise support the vehicle. Remove the rear tire and wheel. Relieve the park brake cable tension at the equalizer.
  2. Disconnect the front cable from the rear cable that is to be replaced.
  3. For the right rear cable, disconnect the cable from the clip. For the left rear cable, fully remove the equalizer nut from the equalizer stud, which is part of the left rear cable.
  4. Disconnect the retainer that holds the cable to the support bracket. Use the Parking Brake Cable Release Tool (J-37043) to release the retainer. Remove the rear brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever. Remove the rear park brake cable from the backing plate using the Parking Brake Cable Release Tool and remove the cable from the vehicle.
