Timing Balance Shafts To Engine (Unit Repair)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

IMPORTANT:  If balance shafts are not properly timed to engine, engine may vibrate or make noise.

  1. Install balance shaft drive chain with colored links lined up with marks on balance shaft drive sprockets and crankshaft sprocket. Use the following procedure to line up links with sprockets:
    1. 1.1 Orient chain so that copper colored and chrome links are visible.
    2. 1.2 Place copper colored link (1) so that it lines up with timing mark on intake side balance shaft sprocket.
    3. 1.3 Working clockwise around chain, place first chrome link (2) in line with timing mark on crankshaft drive sprocket (approximately 6 o'clock position on crank sprocket).
    4. 1.4 Align last chrome link (4) with timing mark on exhaust side balance shaft drive sprocket.
  2. Install balance shaft chain guides.
