Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mazda 3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Peel back seaming welt at appropriate locations to access trim.
  2. Remove seaming welt from sunroof opening, if equipped. Detach clips and remove upper panel and boot panel from center console. Remove ashtray panel screws, detach clips and disconnect cigarette lighter electrical connector. Remove ashtray illumination and remove ashtray panel. Detach tabs and remove center console.
  3. Using appropriate tool, detach left A-pillar trim clips "A". See Figure . Pull A-pillar trim and detach clip "B". Pull A-pillar trim upward and remove clip "B" from A-pillar. Pull clip "B" outward and rotate 45 degrees. Remove clip "B" from grommet by pulling clip upward. Repeat procedure to remove right A-pillar trim.
  4. Remove upper anchor bolts from right and left front seat belts. Detach clips and locator pins, and remove right and left front door scuff plates. Detach clips and locator pins, and remove right and left rear door scuff plates. Remove right and left lower B-pillar trim panels. Detach clips and locator pins, and remove right and left upper B-pillar trim panels.
  5. Lift front of rear seat cushion, detach retainers and remove rear seat cushion. Fold down rear seat back and remove mounting bolts. Raise rear seat back, detach rear seat back from bracket and remove rear seat back.
  6. Remove clips, detach locator pins and remove right and left tire house trim panels. Detach tabs and remove seat belt covers, remove caps and screws and retainers, detach tabs and clips, and remove right and left trunk side upper trim panels. Detach clips and tabs, and remove right and left C-pillar trim panels.
  7. Wrap tip of small flat-blade screwdriver with tape and insert screwdriver in gap between map light and headliner to detach tab. Disconnect map light electrical connector and remove map light. Using same screwdriver, remove interior light lens. Insert screwdriver in gap between interior light and headliner to detach tab. Disconnect interior light electrical connector and remove interior light.
  8. Remove screws and right and left sun visors. Wrap tips of 2 small flat-blade screwdrivers with tape. Insert screwdrivers in slots in sun visor center adapter, disengage tabs and remove adapter. Using flat-blade screwdriver, pry out assist handle covers, pull assist handle outward and remove assist handle.
  9. Detach tab from roof panel. See Fig 1 or Fig 2 . On 4-door models, remove headliner through open right front door. On 5-door models, remove headliner through open liftgate.
  10. On all models, to install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten rear seat back bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
