Brake Calipers: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: DO NOT apply lubricant to the brake pad hardware.
  1. If reusing the brake caliper pin bolts, wipe the old grease from the brake caliper pin bolts with a clean shop towel. Apply a thin coat of NIGLUBE(R) grease to the brake caliper pin bolts. It is not necessary to apply lubricant to the brake pad hardware or the threads of the caliper pin bolts.
    2. NOTE: The upper caliper pin bolt, has a bushing as part of the bolt. The lower caliper pin bolt, is of a solid design.
    NOTE: Install NEW copper brake hose gaskets.
  2. Install the brake caliper over the brake pads into the brake caliper bracket. Install the caliper pin bolts. Assemble the brake hose bolt and the NEW copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose. Install the brake hose to caliper bolt to the brake caliper.
  3. Bleed the brake system. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  4. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads. Remove the wheel lug nuts retaining the brake rotor to the hub. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.


  1. If reusing the brake caliper retainers, clean the sleeves using denatured alcohol, or equivalent. Lubricate the brake caliper pin bolts with a thin coat of high temperature silicone lube. Install the brake caliper to the upper caliper pin bolt. Rotate the brake caliper down over the brake pads into the brake caliper bracket.
    2. NOTE: Install NEW copper brake hose gaskets.
  2. Install the brake caliper pin bolts and tighten to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Remove the plugs in the brake hose end. Assemble the brake hose bolt and the NEW copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose. Install the brake hose to caliper bolt to the brake caliper.
  3. Connect the park brake cable to the park brake lever on the brake caliper. Install the park brake cable bracket to the brake caliper. Install the front park brake cable to the park brake cable connector and tighten to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Bleed the brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM  .
  4. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance. Slowly release the brake pedal. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.
