Brake Warning Indicator Inoperative

NOTE:
The brake warning indicator illuminates when ground is applied to the brake warning indicator control circuit.
- Did you review the brake warning system description and operation and perform the necessary inspections? If so, proceed to next step. If not, see HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM under GENERAL DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLESHOOTING.
- Verify a fault is present. Does the brake warning indicator function normally? If so, test for intermittent and poor connections. If not, proceed to next step.
- Turn off the ignition for 5 seconds. Turn on the ignition while observing the brake warning indicator. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn off? If so, go to step 5 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Install a scan tool. Select the 4WAL 3 SENSOR CURRENT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE(S) function on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display DTC C0288? If so, see DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate ANTI-LOCK article. If not, go to step 10 .
- Apply the park brake. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? If so, go to step 16 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Disconnect the park brake warning switch harness connector. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect a jumper wire between the park brake warning switch harness connector and a good ground. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? If so, go to step 8 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Repair the open in the brake warning indicator control circuit. When complete, go to step 23 .
- Inspect for poor and intermittent connections at the harness connector of the park brake warning switch. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 23 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Replace the park brake warning switch. See PARK BRAKE WARNING LAMP SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When complete, go to step 23 .
- Turn off the ignition. Disconnect the EBCM 10-way harness connector. Connect a jumper wire between the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit and a good ground. Turn on the ignition. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? If so, go to step 21 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Turn off the ignition. Reconnect the EBCM 10-way harness connector. Remove the instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANELS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Connect a test light between the battery positive voltage circuit and the brake warning indicator control circuit at the IPC harness connector. Turn on the ignition. Does the test light illuminate for 3 seconds and then turn off? If so, go to step 13 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Repair the open in the brake warning indicator control circuit or the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit. When complete, go to step 23 .
- Inspect the brake warning indicator lamp for an open (burned out) filament. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 23 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the IPC. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 23 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Replace the instrument panel cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANELS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. When complete, go to step 23 .
- Disconnect the differential pressure switch harness connector. See COMBINATION VALVE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect a jumper wire between the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit and a good ground. Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? If so, go to step 18 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Repair the open in the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit. When complete, go to step 23 .
- Test the ground circuit of the brake pressure differential switch for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 23 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the brake pressure differential switch. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 23 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Replace the brake pressure differential switch. See COMBINATION VALVE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When complete, go to step 23 .
- Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the EBCM. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step 23 . If not, proceed to next step.
- Replace the EBCM. See ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANTI-LOCK article. Following EBCM replacement, use the scan tool to perform tire size calibration. When complete, go to step 23 .
- Verify the system is repaired. Does the brake warning indicator function normally? If so, system is okay. If not, go to step 3 .
NOTE:
This step tests for an open in the ABS pressure differential sensor signal circuit or the brake warning indicator control circuit by substituting the brake warning indicator lamp and the IPC with a test light.
