Rear Brake Shoes: Removal

  1. Raise vehicle.
  2. Remove wheels.
  3. Mark the relationship of the brake drum to the axle.
  4. Remove brake drum.
  5. Remove brake shoe return springs. See Figure
  6. Remove brake shoe guide.
  7. Remove hold down springs.
  8. Remove hold down pins.
  9. Remove actuator lever and actuator lever pivot.
  10. Remove actuator lever and lever pivot.
  11. Remove lever return spring.
  12. Remove parking brake strut and strut spring.
  13. Remove parking brake lever.
  14. Remove brake shoes.
  15. Remove adjusting screw assembly and adjusting screw spring from brake shoes.
  16. Inspect all parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace parts as needed.
  17. Replace all worn parts.
  18. Inspect wheel cylinder for signs of leakage. If there are signs of leakage, overhaul or replace wheel cylinder. See WHEEL CYLINDER .
  19. Inspect brake drum for scoring and machining tolerance.
