Rear Brake Shoes: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Safari and 2002 Chevrolet Astro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Lubricate brake shoe backing plate, adjusting screw threads, socket and socket face with a thin coat of high temperature silicone lubricant.
  2. NOTE: Do not interchange the right and left adjusting screws.
  3. Install adjusting screw assembly and adjusting screw spring on brake shoes. The coils of the adjusting screw spring must not touch the adjusting screw.
  4. Install brake shoes on the backing plate.
  5. Install parking brake lever.
  6. Install strut spring on the parking brake strut.
  7. Install parking brake strut.
  8. Install actuator lever and lever pivot. See Fig 1.
  9. Install actuator lever return spring.
  10. Install hold down pins.
  11. Install hold down springs.
  12. Install brake shoe guide.
  13. Install brake shoe return springs.
  14. Install brake drum. Align marks made during disassembly.
  15. Install wheels.
  16. Adjust brakes. See REAR DRUM BRAKE SHOES  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  17. Lower vehicle.
