Brake Caliper: Disassembly

  1. Remove caliper. See FRONT BRAKE CALIPER .
  2. Drain all brake fluid from caliper.
  3. Pad interior of caliper with clean shop towels.
  4. Remove piston from caliper bore. See Figure.
  5. Remove boot from caliper bore. DO NOT scratch the housing bore.
  6. Remove piston seal from caliper bore. Do not use a metal tool.
  7. Remove bleeder valve from caliper body.
  8. Clean bleeder valve, caliper bore, caliper passages and piston with denatured alcohol. Dry the parts and blow out brake fluid passages. Use dry and filtered compressed air.
  9. Inspect piston and caliper for scoring on piston surface or in caliper bore. Inspect for corrosion on piston, chrome plating damage on piston, or corrosion in caliper bore. Use crocus cloth in order to polish light corrosion from caliper bore. Replace caliper if corrosion cannot be removed. Inspect for pitting in caliper bore.
  10. Replace piston or caliper if any damage is found.


  1. Lubricate new piston seal, caliper bore, and piston with clean brake fluid. See Fig 1. Install piston seal. Make sure piston seal is not twisted in caliper bore groove. Install boot on piston.
  2. Install piston in caliper bore. Install boot into caliper housing bore using the Piston Seal Installer ((J-26267). Install bleeder valve in caliper body. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
