Front Cover: Removal

  1. Remove retaining bolt in front of the shield. Lift up on the front of the shield. Lift shield off rear bracket. Disconnect battery negative cable. Remove upper intake manifold sight shield.
  2. Drain engine coolant and engine block. See DRAINING & REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM . Remove right front fender wheelhouse panel. Remove upper fan shroud. Remove fan clutch. See FAN BLADE ASSEMBLY .
  3. Remove drive belt and oil fill tube. See OIL FILLER TUBE . Remove thermostat housing crossover. See THERMOSTAT HOUSING COVER . Remove crankshaft balancer. See CRANKSHAFT BALANCER . Remove crankshaft front oil seal. See CRANKSHAFT FRONT OIL SEAL . Remove water pump. See WATER PUMP .
  4. Disconnect camshaft sensor electrical connector. Remove camshaft sensor bolt and sensor. Disconnect crankshaft sensor connector. Remove crankshaft sensor bolt and sensor. Remove crankshaft position sensor spacer bolts. Remove crankshaft position sensor spacer.
  5. Remove 5 bolts retaining upper oil pan to engine front cover. Remove bracket bolts and bracket for turbocharger outlet coolant pipe. Remove 13 bolts for engine front cover. Using Seal Cutter (J-37228) separate engine front cover from cylinder block and upper oil pan. Do not bend turbocharger coolant pipe. Remove engine front cover. Remove O-ring from engine front cover.
  6. Remove oil pressure relief valve from engine front cover. Clean engine front cover with a suitable cleaning solvent. Clean engine front cover and engine mating surfaces. Inspect engine front cover mating surfaces for damage. Inspect engine front cover O-ring sealing surfaces for damage. Replace engine front cover if any damage is found.
