C5 Clutch Reaction Plate Selection

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install C5 clutch backplate. C5 clutch backplate can be installed in either direction. Starting with a C5 clutch friction plate, alternately install 5 friction plates and 4 reaction plates into main housing. Then, install one C5 clutch friction plate and one C5 clutch reaction plate. See Figure and Fig 1 .
    NOTE: For selecting correct C5 clutch reaction (selective) plate, the installed C5 clutch pack must be topped by a reaction plate to get a proper measurement.
    CAUTION: DO NOT install special tools onto gear thrust plate rivets of C3 clutch backplate assembly. Tools could damage rivets. DO NOT damage P1 planetary carrier bushing when installing Bar and Stud Assembly (J-24204-2) or equivalent, into main housing. Threaded rod of tool must pass through bushing but not touch it.
  2. Install Bar and Stud Assembly (J-24204-2) or equivalent, and C3/C4 Piston Spring Compressor (J-44530) or equivalent, into main housing. Ensure spring compressor does not touch the backplate rivets or bushing. See Figure.
  3. Hand-tighten wing nut of bar and stud tool to compress C5 clutch plates enough to remove all coning. Place a 1" (25 mm) gauge bar on rear surface of main housing at a location near C3/C4 piston spring compressor tool. See Fig 2.
  4. Measure distance from top of gauge bar to top of C5 clutch pack (dimension "A"). See Fig 2. Subtract width of gauge bar (dimension "B"). This will give final measurement (dimension "C") for selecting final C5 clutch reaction plate. For dimension "C" reaction plate selection, see C5 CLUTCH REACTION PLATE CHART  table.
  5. Remove special tool set, using care not to damage the bushing or P1 planetary carrier. Remove 6 C5 clutch friction plates and 5 clutch reaction plates. Keep in order and set aside for installation.
