C4 Clutch

CAUTION: DO NOT install special tools onto the gear thrust plate rivets of the C3 clutch backplate assembly. The rivets will be damaged.
  1. Install Bar & Stud Assembly (J-24204-2) or equivalent, and C3/C4 Piston Spring Compressor (J-44530) or equivalent, into main housing. See Fig 1. Ensure bar and stud assembly tool is not touching gear thrust plate rivets on C3 clutch backplate.
  2. Compress piston return spring assemblies until a gap is visible below retaining rings. See Fig 1. Remove retaining ring and spiral retaining ring. Remove special tools from main housing and remove C4 clutch backplate.
  3. Remove 5 C4 clutch friction plates and 4 reaction plates. Remove, as a unit, C4 spring plate and 3 piston return spring assemblies. Remove 3 piston return spring assemblies from C4 spring plate. See Fig 2. Remove P1 ring gear from inside main housing bore.
