Converter Housing: Disassembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, 2003 Chevrolet Cab & Chassis Silverado, and 2002 GMC Sierra.   1. From lower side of torque converter housing, remove pressure tap plug and "O" ring. See Fig 1. Using a suitable filter wrench, remove control-main filter.
  2. On models with direct mount, without cooler manifold, remove magnet from filter. See Fig 1. Remove filter attachment tube. Remove 2 hydraulic connector assemblies and "O" rings or 2 shipping plugs and "O" rings.
  3. On models with cooler manifold, remove magnet from filter. See Fig 1. Remove filter attachment tube. On direct mount type, without cooler manifold, remove bolt access cover. Remove 2 shipping plugs and "O" rings or 2 elbow-type hydraulic fittings. Mark orientation of each fitting to the manifold, loosen elbow fitting lock nuts and remove fittings and "O" rings.
  4. On models with cooler manifold, remove cooler manifold bolts, cooler manifold, gasket, channel plate, and gasket. See Fig 2.
