Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

  1. Remove the valve rocker arm. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  2. Disconnect the spark plug wire at the spark plug.
    • Twist each plug wire boot 1/2 turn.
    • Pull only on the boot in order to remove the wire from the spark plug.

    IMPORTANT: Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head with the engine at room temperature.
  4. Loosen the spark plug 1 or 2 turns.
  5. Brush or air blast away any dirt or debris from around the spark plug.
  6. Remove the spark plug.

  8. Install J 22794  into the spark plug hole.
  9. Attach an air hose to J 22794  .
  10. Apply compressed air to J 22794  in order to hold the valves in place.

  12. Use J 38606 in order to compress the valve spring.

  14. Remove the valve stem keys (3).
  15. Carefully release the valve spring tension.
  16. Remove the J 38606 .
  17. Remove the valve spring cap (4).
  18. Remove the valve spring (5).
    IMPORTANT: A second design valve stem oil seal and shim may be used on later engines.
    A separate spring shim is not required with the second design seal and shim.
  19. Remove the valve stem oil seal (6) (first design).
  20. Remove the valve spring shim (7) (first design).
  21. Remove the valve stem oil seal and shim (2) (second design)
