Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to GENERATOR (4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L ENGINES) or GENERATOR (8.1L ENGINE) .
  2. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  3. Remove the coolant air bleed pipe. Refer to COOLANT AIR BLEED PIPE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (4.8L, 5.3L, AND 6.0L ENGINES) in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the left exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - LEFT (4.8L, 5.3L, AND 6.0L ENGINES) or EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - LEFT (8.1L ENGINE) in Engine Exhaust.
  5. Remove the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

    IMPORTANT: The cylinder head bolts are NOT reusable.
    NOTE: After removal, place the cylinder head on two wood blocks to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces.
  6. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
  7. Remove the cylinder head.

  8. Remove the cylinder head gasket.
  9. Discard the gasket.
  10. Discard the cylinder head bolts.
  11. Clean and inspect the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L Unit Repair.
