Steering Column Tilt Function Inoperative

  1. Did you review the General Description and perform the necessary inspections? See DESCRIPTION  and VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION  . Go to next step.
  2. Verify that the steering column tilt function is inoperative. If steering column tilt function is inoperative, go to next step.
  3. Verify that the shoe is not seized on the pivot pin. If shoe is seized in pivot pin, go to step  9 . If shoe is not seized in pivot pin, go to next step.
  4. Inspect the shoe grooves for dirt, burrs, or rust. If shoe grooves are not free of dirt, burrs, or rust go to step  9 . If shoe grooves are free of dirt, burrs, or rust, go to next step.
  5. Inspect weak or broken shoe lock spring. If spring is broken or weak, go to step  9 . If spring is not broken or weak, go to next step.
  6. Inspect the pivot pins for binding. If pivot pins bind, go to step  10 . If pivot pins do not bind, go to next step.
  7. Inspect for a weak or broken wheel tilt spring. If spring is weak or broken, go to step  11 . If spring is not broken or weak, go to next step.
  8. Inspect the steering column wiring harness for tightness. If steering column wiring harness is too tight, go to step  12 . If steering column wiring harness is not too tight, go to step
  9. Replace the tilt head. See STEERING COLUMN  under OVERHAUL. After completing repair, go to step  13 .
  10. Replace the pivot pins. See STEERING COLUMN  under OVERHAUL. After completing repair, go to step  13 .
  11. Replace the tilt spring. See STEERING COLUMN  under OVERHAUL. After completing repair, go to step  13 .
  12. Reroute the steering column wiring harness to the correct location. After completing repair, go to next step.
  13. Operate the steering column tilt function in order to verify the repair. If condition still exists, go to step  3 .
