  1. Grease centering sphere mating surfaces with lithium grease. Place base of Centering Sphere Installer Tool (J-41688) into vice. Place following items into vice: centering sphere lower half, NEW joint preload spring, centering sphere upper half, and top half of installer tool.
  2. Compress joint preload spring. Rotate driver 90 degrees clockwise, and lock into place. Firmly attach upper shaft assembly onto centering sphere. Rotate upper shaft assembly 90 degrees downward, in order to lock centering sphere into place.
  3. Remove centering sphere installer, race and upper shaft assembly from vise. Disassembly installer. Remove shaft and centering sphere from installer.
  4. Apply lithium grease onto exposed shaft mating surface. Install lower shaft assembly. Install race and upper shaft assembly onto lower shaft assembly, and tilt 90 degrees toward each other. Install column support assembly onto jacket assembly. Tighten 4 NEW TORX(R) screws to 13 ft. lbs. (17 N.m).
  5. Install shaft assembly onto column support assembly. Install housing and bearing assembly. Using tilt lever position, lock shoes onto dowel pins. Lubricate pivot pins with lithium grease. Align pivot pin holes, and install pins. Stake pins in 3 locations, 120 degrees apart.
  6. Install following items: inner race, upper bearing inner race seat, upper bearing spring, turn signal cancel cam assembly, cam orientation plate, and bearing retainer. Compress cam orientation plate using Lock Plate Compressor (J-23653-SIR) and Cam Orientation Plate Adapter (J-42137). Install bearing retainer ring onto steering shaft. Remove compressor and adapter.
  7. Install SIR Coil. If reusing SIR Coil, it must be centered first. See CENTERING SIR Coil ASSEMBLY  . Secure SIR Coil downlead wires onto tilt housing with tie wrap and black wire spacer. Install retaining ring. On new SIR Coils, pull orange tab and remove.
  8. Install adapter and bearing assembly. Compress lower bearing spring to length of .91-.94" (23-24 mm) between lower bearing seat, steering wheel speed sensor assembly and lower spring retainer. Install steering shaft seal onto sensor retainer. Install sensor retainer onto shaft assembly.
