Removal & Installation: Turbocharger: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Savana Special, 2002 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2002 GMC Savana, 2002 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 2002 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Check the intake and exhaust systems leading to and from the turbocharger in order to ensure that there is no debris. Even small debris can cause severe wheel damage if drawn in during high speed operation. Make sure the turbocharger and exhaust manifold flanges are clean and free of any foreign material. Use high temperature anti-seize compound GM P/N 1052771 on all threaded fasteners connected to the turbocharger. Inspect the oil feed and return passages in the engine block and the turbocharger. Make sure these passages are clean and open. Always replace the O-ring between the turbocharger and the engine block.
  1. Apply anti-seize compound GM P/N 1052771 on all threaded fasteners connected to the turbocharger. Install new turbocharger seals to the engine block. Install the turbocharger assembly to the engine block. See Figure.
  2. Install the turbocharger mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Slide the exhaust clamps over the exhaust manifold and turbocharger. Install the right hand side exhaust pipe. In order to ensure heat shield clearance, locate the exhaust pipe clamps as shown. See Fig 1. Place the clamps in the correct position.
  3. Install the left hand side exhaust pipe. Place the clamps in the correct position. See Fig 2. Tighten the clamps at the exhaust manifold end first. Tighten the clamps to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Raise the vehicle. Install the catalytic converter pipe and the nuts to the turbocharger. Tighten the catalytic converter pipe nuts to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Lower the vehicle.
  5. Install the turbocharger heat shield. See Fig 3. Install the turbocharger heat shield mounting bolts and nut and tighten to specifications and in sequence. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. Install the vacuum hose to the wastegate actuator. Install the upper intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLDS .
  7. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries. Run the engine at an idle for at least 2 minutes after completing the installation of the turbocharger. This will allow the oil to lubricate the bearing inside the turbocharger. While running the engine, check for any leaks. Install the engine cover. See FRONT COVER .
