Timing Chain & Sprockets: Removal

  1. Remove engine front cover. See ENGINE FRONT COVER .
  2. Align timing marks on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
  3. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts.
  4. Remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
  5. Install Crankshaft Protector Button (J 42846) into the end of the crankshaft.
  6. Remove crankshaft sprocket using a suitable 3-jaw puller.
  7. Clean and inspect timing chain and sprockets. Inspect for worn teeth, damaged teeth, chipped teeth, uneven wear on one edge of teeth, worn valleys between sprocket teeth, and crankshaft sprocket keyway for wear.
