Oil Pan: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 GMC Cab & Chassis Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes of the sealer being applied or sealer will begin to cure, causing an inadequate seal.
  1. Apply Sealant GM (PN 12346286) to the sides of the front and rear crankshaft bearing caps, and on both left and right sides (4 locations total).
  2. Install a NEW oil pan gasket into the oil pan groove, if required.
  3. Install oil pan.
  4. Install oil pan bolts. Tighten oil pan bolts in sequence and to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m) on the first pass and to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m) on the second pass. See Fig 1.
  5. Position battery cable channel into place.
  6. Install battery cable channel bolt. Tighten battery cable channel bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. Install oil level sensor to oil pan. Tighten oil level sensor to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. Install engine harness clip to oil pan.
  9. Connect oil level sensor electrical connector. See Fig 2.
  10. Install oil level indicator.
  11. Fill engine with oil.
  12. Install and tighten crossbar bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  13. Install oil pan skid plate and bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  14. Install starter motor.
  15. On 4WD models, install front differential. See appropriate DIFFERENTIALS article in DRIVE AXLES.
