Noise Diagnosis

CAUTION:
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
NOTE:
Any noise emitted from the rear of the vehicle that is induced by vehicle speed or driving terrain as related to the front suspension.
- Attempt to duplicate the noise. Road test the vehicle. Is there an abnormal noise present? If so, proceed to next step. If not, system is okay.
- Shift the transmission into park. Turn the ignition off. Bounce the rear of the vehicle in order to duplicate the noise. Is the complaint noise heard? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 4.
- Bounce the rear of the vehicle. Use a Chassis Ear (J-39570) in order to locate the source of the noise. Repair or replace the suspect component(s) as necessary. When complete, go to step 1.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Inspect all of the rear suspension components for any damage. Are any components damaged? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 6.
- Repair or replace any damaged components. When complete, go to step 1.
- Inspect the tires for proper inflation. Correct the tire inflation pressure as necessary. Inspect the tires for unusual wear. Does either tire exhibit unusual tread wear? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 9.
- Rotate the tires. Road test the vehicle. Is the noise now emitted from the front of the vehicle? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 9.
- Replace the tire(s) that are causing the noise. When complete, go to step 1.
- Ensure that the park brake cable and the spare tire are secured properly. Did you service any components? If so, go to step 1. If not, proceed to next step.
- Ensure that all of the wheel nuts are tightened to 100 Ft. Lbs. (140 N.m). Tighten as necessary. Did you tighten any of the wheel nuts? If so, go to step 1. If not, proceed to next step.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Use your hand to push and pull on the strut. Is either of the struts loose? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 14.
- Inspect the strut fasteners for the correct fastener tightening specification. Tighten as necessary. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Use your hands in order to push and pull the strut. Is the strut loose? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 1.
- Replace the loose or worn strut. See STRUT ASSEMBLY . When complete, go to step 1.
- Use your hands in order to push and pull on the rear axle tie rod. Is the rear spindle rod loose? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 17.
- Inspect the rear spindle rod fasteners. Tighten as necessary. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Use your hands in order to push and pull on the rear spindle rod. Is the rear spindle rod loose? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 1.
- Replace the rear spindle rod as necessary. When complete, go to step 1.
- Use your hands in order to push and pull on the rear trailing arm. Is either rear trailing arm loose? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 20.
- Inspect the rear trailing arm fasteners for the correct fastener tightening specification. Tighten as necessary. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Use your hands in order to push and pull on the rear trailing arm. Is either rear trailing arm loose? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 1.
- Replace any worn or loose rear trailing arm bushings. When complete, go to step 1.
- Use an on-vehicle wheel balancer in order to spin the rear wheels. Increase the wheel speed until the noise is at the most audible level. Do not allow the J-39570 to contact any moving components. Use a J-39570 in order to locate the source of the noise. Does either wheel bearing exhibit excessive noise? If so, proceed to next step. If not, go to step 7.
- Replace the wheel bearing(s). See HUB & BEARING ASSEMBLY . When complete, go to step 1.
NOTE:
It may be necessary to compare this vehicle to a identical vehicle to determine if the customer's complaint a normal operating characteristic of the vehicle.
