Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Make sure all the cylinder head locating pins are securely mounted in the cylinder block deck face.
  2. Install a new cylinder head gasket using the deck face locating pins for retention.

  3. Align the cylinder head with the deck face locating pins.
  4. Place the cylinder head in position on the deck face.

    Important:  DO NOT reuse the old M11 cylinder head bolts.

  5. Install new M11 cylinder head bolts (2).
  6. Install the M6 bolts at the front of the cylinder head. Install the longer M6 bolt (1) in the outboard location as shown. Install the 2 shorter M6 bolts (3) in the locations shown.

    CAUTION: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE in Cautions and Notices.
  7. Tighten the M11 bolts.

    Tighten 

    1. 7.1. Tighten the M11 cylinder head bolts to 40 N.m (30 lb ft) in the sequence shown.
    2. 7.2. Repeat the sequence turning each bolt an additional 100 degrees using the J 36660-A. 
    3. 7.3. Repeat the sequence again turning each bolt an additional 100 degrees (total 200 degrees) using the J 36660-A.

  8. Tighten the long M6 bolt (1).

    Tighten 

    Tighten the long M6 cylinder head bolt to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

  9. Tighten the 2 shorter M6 bolts (2).

    Tighten 

    Tighten the 2 shorter M6 cylinder head bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

  10. Install the lifters.
  11. Install the rocker arms.
  12. Install the left cylinder head camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Replacement- Left .
  13. Install the primary camshaft drive chain. Refer to Primary Camshaft Drive Chain Replacement .
  14. Remove the J 42038  from the camshafts.
  15. Install the camshaft covers. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left .
  16. Install the left exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - LEFT (LX5) or EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - LEFT (L47) in Engine Exhaust.
  17. Install the water housing crossover. Refer to WATER CROSSOVER REPLACEMENT (LX5) or WATER CROSSOVER REPLACEMENT (L47) in Engine Cooling.
  18. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
