Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Cadillac Seville and 2003 Cadillac DeVille. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Start and idle the engine until Closed Loop is achieved. Turn off all the accessories. Observe the HO2S voltage for the applicable bank with a scan tool. Command the AIR system on with a scan tool. Observe and record the HO2S voltage while the AIR system is commanded on. Does the HO2S voltage drop below 350 mV? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to next step.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of all hose/pipes and vacuum lines for the following conditions:
    • Any loose or missing clamps on the AIR pipes/hoses.
    • Any restrictions, leaks or splits, or pinched hoses/pipes.
    • Any components with evidence of heat damage.

Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to next step.

  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the vacuum line at the shut-off valve for the applicable bank. Connect a vacuum gage to the vacuum line. Start and idle the engine. Command the AIR system on with a scan tool. Does the vacuum gage display a value greater than 10 in. Hg? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  10.
  5. Connect a vacuum pump to the applicable shut-off valve. Apply 10 in. Hg to the shut-off valve. Does the shut-off valve hold vacuum for one minute? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  11.
  6. Connect the vacuum line to the shut-off valve. Disconnect the intermediate hose from the shut-off valve. Start and idle the engine. Command the AIR system on with a scan tool. Does airflow freely at the intermediate hose? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  7. CAUTION: Allow the check valve to cool off before proceeding with the next check in order to avoid being burned. Tap on the check valve in order to remove any debris that may be inside the valve.
  8. Remove the applicable shut-off valve from the exhaust manifold. See SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SHUT-OFF VALVE under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Remove the outlet pipe from the shut-off valve. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Command the AIR system on with a scan tool. Does airflow freely from the shut-off valve? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to step  11.
  9. Repair the leak or restriction in one of the following components:
    • The intermediate pipe/hose.
    • The crossover hose.
    • The "Y" connector at the AIR pump outlet hose.

Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step  12.

  10. CAUTION: Allow the check valve to cool off before proceeding with the next check in order to avoid being burned. Tap on the check valve in order to remove any debris that may be inside the valve.
  11. Replace the leaking or restricted shut-off valve outlet pipe. See SECONDARY AIR INJECTION PUMP OUTLET PIPE/HOSE under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  12.
  12. Replace the vacuum line between the AIR solenoid valve and the applicable bank AIR shut-off valve. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  12.
  13. CAUTION: Allow the check valve to cool off before proceeding with the next check in order to avoid being burned. Tap on the check valve in order to remove any debris that may be inside the valve.
  14. Replace the AIR shut-off valve for the applicable bank. See SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SHUT-OFF VALVE under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to next step.
  15. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn off the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine and operate vehicle within the Conditions For Running DTC. You may also operate vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition cycle? If yes, go to step  2. If no, go to next step.
  16. Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
