Additional Inspections

  1. Check the exhaust system for the following possible restrictions:
    • The exhaust system for damaged or collapsed pipes.
    • The mufflers for heat distress or internal failure. Go to RESTRICTED EXHAUST under EXHAUST SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTS - 3.4L ALERO, GRAND AM, IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article.
  2. Check the Transmission Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) operation. The TCC applying too soon can cause the engine to spark knock. Go to appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
