Oil Pump: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue and 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Coat the pump side of the NEW oil pump gasket in crosshatched areas shown in the illustration with a thin, even coating of Permatex Anaerobic Flange Sealant or equivalent. See Fig 1. DO NOT cover and/or restrict the gasket openings with excess sealant.
  1. Install the oil pump gasket. Install the oil pump and align with the guide pins. Apply Permatex Threadlocker Blue (P/N 21485278) to the oil pump bolts and install the bolts. See Fig 2. Tighten the oil pump bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. Install the oil pump collar. Coat the lip of the front main oil seal with a small amount of clean engine oil to aid in installation. Using Camshaft/Front Main Seal Installer (J-35268-A), install the front main oil seal. Ensure that the front main oil seal is fully and evenly seated.
  3. Install the crankshaft drive gear. Install a NEW crankshaft drive gear bolt. Tighten the crankshaft drive gear bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the oil pump pickup tube. Install the oil pump pickup tube bolts. Tighten the oil pump pickup tube bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Install the oil pan. See OIL PAN .
  5. Release and pivot the generator into place and install the generator lower mounting bolt. Tighten the generator lower mounting bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Position the A/C compressor and idler pulley bracket. Install the A/C compressor and bracket bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
NOTE: The oil pump bolts must be re-tightened to the appropriate specification AFTER the generator mounting bolts and the drive belt idler pulley for left (front) camshafts have been tightened to specification to allow for proper compression of the oil pump gasket.
  6. Install the timing belt rear cover. See TIMING BELT REAR COVER . Install and tighten the drive belt idler pulley for left (front) camshafts. Re-tighten the oil pump bolts to specification. Install the timing gears and belt. See TIMING BELT & GEARS .
  7. Install the intake air cleaner. Reconnect the negative battery cable. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Refill crankcase with appropriate engine oil and check oil level.
