Crankshaft And Main Bearings: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue and 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Upper bearings have oil grooves and oil holes. Use only NEW bearing bolts.
  1. Install the crankshaft reluctor ring. Install the crankshaft reluctor bolts. Use the NEW crankshaft sensor bolts. Tighten the crankshaft reluctor ring screw to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  2. Install the crankshaft bearings to the engine block. Install the crankshaft to the engine block. Apply clean engine oil to the bearing surfaces. Install the main bearings to the main bearing caps. Apply RTV sealer, LOCTITE 5900 or equivalent to the fourth main bearing cap. Install the main bearing caps to the engine block. Place the main bearing caps in numerical order.
    NOTE: Orient the torsional bridge with the arrow pointing to the front of the engine.
    NOTE: NEW main bearing cap bolts must be used or damage may occur when the final tightening is performed.
  3. Install the crankshaft bearing bridge. Install the crankshaft main bearing cap bolts loosely. Clean the old thread locking compound from the adjusting sleeves. Back out the crankshaft bearing bridge adjusting sleeves until the bushings DO NOT contact the engine block when the bridge is fully seated.
  4. Tighten the crankshaft main bearing cap bolts in 3 passes. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  5. Apply the thread locking compound LOCTITE 272 or equivalent to the crankshaft bearing bridge adjusting sleeves. Using Bearing Bridge Sleeve Wrench (J-44628), tighten the crankshaft bearing bridge adjusting sleeves to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten the outer crankshaft bearing bridge bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Fill engine to proper level with appropriate engine oil.
