Installation (Right)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue and 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Lubricate the camshaft bearing surfaces with clean engine oil. If removed, install valve lifters in original lifter bores. See HYDRAULIC VALVE LASH ADJUSTERS (IN-VEHICLE) .
NOTE: Ensure the pin on the exhaust camshaft is approximately in the 1 o'clock position and/or that the pin on the intake camshaft is approximately in the 11 o'clock position to allow for minimal load on the camshaft when installing the bearing caps.

Install the camshaft onto the cylinder head.

NOTE: Markings on camshaft bearing cap "L" or "R" DO NOT refer to left or right. Front cylinder bank is considered LEFT. Rear cylinder bank is considered RIGHT.
  2. Apply a small amount of Permatex Anaerobic Flange Sealant on the forward edge of the rear camshaft bearing caps to ensure an adequate seal between the bearing cap and cylinder head. DO NOT allow the sealer to get into the oil journal of the cap. The camshaft bearing caps for the rear cylinder head are marked L1-L8 (Cylinders 1, 3, 5). See Figure.
  3. Install the camshaft bearing caps in their appropriate position. Install the camshaft bearing cap bolts. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts starting from the center cap gradually. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  4. Coat lip of seal with a small amount of clean engine oil to aid in installation. Using the Camshaft Installer (J-35268-A), install camshaft seal. For difficult to access areas, the Camshaft Seal Installer (J-35749) can be used to install the camshaft seal. Ensure that the camshaft seal is fully and evenly seated.
NOTE: Use a NEW camshaft gear bolt. The required tightening method will stretch the bolt, to its yield point. Therefore, the bolt is NOT reusable.
  5. Using the Torque Angle Gauge (SA9140E), install a NEW camshaft gear bolt. Use the Camshaft Gear Retainer (J-42069-2) to hold the camshaft gear and camshaft in place while tightening the camshaft gear bolt. Tighten the camshaft gear bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. Install the timing belt. See TIMING BELT & GEARS .
  7. Remove the Debris Screen (J-45482). Install the intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten the battery terminal bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
