Test D: Blower Motor Malfunction

NOTE: For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
NOTE: Definition: The blower motor operates in at least one, but not all, speed positions.
  1. If diagnostic system check was not performed, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If diagnostic system check was performed, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Place blower motor switch in each speed position. If blower motor operates at selected speeds, Check wiring harness and connectors for poor connections. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If poor connection is not found, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect blower motor harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to ground, probe blower motor harness connector terminal "A". Set blower motor speed control in each speed position. If test light illuminates in each speed position, go to step  7. If test light does not illuminate at each speed position, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect blower motor resistor harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using test light connected to ground, probe blower motor resistor harness connector terminal "G" (Orange wire). See Figure. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  12.
  5. NOTE: Ensure blower motor control processor and HVAC control assembly connectors are connected before performing next step.
  6. Using test light connected to ground, probe HVAC control panel harness C1 connector terminals "E" (Purple wire), "F" (Light Blue wire), "G" (Tan wire) and "H" (Yellow wire) while moving blower motor speed selector switch to each speed position. See Figure. If test light illuminates at each corresponding speed position, go to step  10. If test light does not illuminate at each corresponding speed position, go to next step.
  7. Check suspect blower motor control circuit wire, causing test light to not illuminate, for open or high resistance. Repair wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  16. If suspect wire is okay, go to step  11.
  8. Connect test light between blower motor harness connector terminals. Set blower motor speed control in each speed position. If test light illuminates in each speed position, go to step  9. If test light does not illuminate in each speed position, go to next step.
  9. Check Black wire between blower motor resistor harness connector terminal "E" and ground for high resistance. See Figure. Repair Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  16. If connections are okay, go to step  10.
  10. Check for poor connections or connector damage at blower motor harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  16. If connections are okay, go to step  13.
  11. Check for poor connections or connector damage at blower motor resistor harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  16. If connections are okay, go to step  14.
  12. Check for poor connections or connector damage at HVAC control panel harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  16. If connections are okay, go to step  15.
  13. Repair Orange wire between blower motor resistor harness connector terminal "G" and HVAC HI Fuse (30-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, go to step  16.
  14. Replace blower motor. See BLOWER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  16.
  15. Replace blower motor resistor. See BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  16.
  16. Replace HVAC control assembly. See HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  17. Operate system to verify repair. If system operates normally, repair is complete. If system does not operate normally, return to step  2.
