Fuel Rail & Injectors: Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  . Disconnect negative battery cable. See NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE  under MISCELLANEOUS. Remove the 2 mounting nuts from the injector sight shield (top engine cover). See Figure . Lift the sight shield from the front and pull forward to disengage the rear tab from the bracket.
  2. Clean the fuel rail assembly with a spray type Engine Cleaner (GM X-30A), if necessary. Follow the package instructions. Do not soak the fuel rail in liquid cleaning solvent. Disconnect the fuel feed and return pipes from the fuel rail. See FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS  .
  3. Remove vacuum line from fuel pressure regulator. Disconnect the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) air tube from the valve cover. See Figure . Disconnect the PCV valve from the valve cover. Partially drain the cooling system. Disconnect the surge tank inlet hose from the engine. Reposition the coolant surge tank inlet pipe. Remove the fuel rail bracket retainer nut.
  4. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors from each fuel injector. Lay the harness aside. Remove the fuel rail attaching studs. Remove the fuel rail. See Figure . Remove the injector lower "O" ring seal from the spray tip end of each injector. Discard the "O" ring seals.
  5. To remove injectors from the fuel rail, remove the fuel injector by pushing the locking tab on the fuel rail toward the center of the fuel rail. Remove the fuel injector upper "O" ring and discard "O" rings.
