Removal & Installation: Transmission: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sonoma, 2003 GMC Jimmy, 2003 Chevrolet S10 Pickup, 2003 Chevrolet Blazer, and 2002 GMC Sonoma. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Disconnect the battery.
Raise the vehicle.
Drain the transmission fluid if necessary. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:

- For 2003 models, see SERVICING article.
Remove the rear driveshaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
Remove the transmission support from the vehicle. See TRANSMISSION SUPPORT .
Remove the exhaust crossover pipe assembly. See Fig 1.
Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.
Remove the transmission mount. See TRANSMISSION MOUNT .
Remove the transfer case, if equipped. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article in TRANSFER CASES.
Remove the shift cable end from the transmission shift lever ball stud and the pan rail bracket. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:

- For 2003 models, see SERVICING article.
Remove the transmission heat shield if equipped. See Fig 2.
Disconnect the transmission vent hose, the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector, and the main electrical connector from the transmission. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:

See Fig 3.
Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.
Remove the torque converter access plug. See Fig 4.
Remove the starter motor to gain access to the torque converter bolts. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL. See Fig 5.
Mark the flywheel-to-torque converter relationship.
Remove the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Use care to not drop the bolts into bell housing.
Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:

- For 2003 models, see SERVICING article.
Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
Install a safety chain around the transmission.
Remove the studs and or bolts that secure the transmission to the engine.
Install the Converter Holding Strap (J-1366) onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
Pull the transmission straight back.
Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
