Removal & Installation: Transmission: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Sonoma, 2003 GMC Jimmy, 2003 Chevrolet S10 Pickup, 2003 Chevrolet Blazer, and 2002 GMC Sonoma. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the converter housing strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  2. Raise the transmission into place and remove the converter housing strap from the transmission.
  3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter made during removal. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.
  4. Install the studs and/or bolts securing the transmission to the engine. See Figure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  5. Install the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing. See Fig 1. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. Install the starter motor. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL.
  7. Install the torque converter access plug. See Figure.
  8. Remove the safety chain from the transmission.
  9. Install the transmission vent hose, fuel lines, and the wiring harness to the transmission. See Figure.
  10. Install the bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission. See Figure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  11. Install the shift cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
  12. Install the transfer case, if equipped. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article in TRANSFER CASES.
  13. Connect the vent tube hose and the electrical connections, if equipped, to the transfer case.
  14. Install the transmission mount to the transmission (2WD) or transfer case adapter (4WD). See TRANSMISSION MOUNT .
  15. Install the exhaust crossover pipe assembly. See Figure.
  16. Install the transmission support to the vehicle. See TRANSMISSION SUPPORT .
  17. Remove the transmission jack from the transmission.
  18. Install the rear driveshaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  19. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines at this time if necessary. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
  20. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Connect the battery. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  23. Fill the transmission to the proper level with transmission fluid. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
  24. Road test the vehicle to check for proper operation. Check transmission for leaks.
