Draining & Refilling
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
Saturn ATF (P/N 21005966 and 21019223), and DEXRON-III ATF are not compatible with this transaxle. This transaxle uses Saturn DEX-CVT(R) Fluid (P/N 22688912) only.
- Position vehicle on hoist and raise vehicle. Remove lower tube plug. See Figure .
- Remove lower tube assembly and drain fluid. See Fig 1 . Allow the fluid to completely drain.
- Install lower tube assembly. Tighten transaxle lower tube assembly to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Temporarily install original lower tube plug. DO NOT torque plug. Lower vehicle.
- Add a range of 6-7 Qts. of appropriate transaxle fluid to unit. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS .
- Install scan tool. Start vehicle. Vehicle must be level.
- Circulate the fluid through the transaxle using the following procedure:
- Shift transaxle from Park to Reverse for 10 seconds.
- Shift transaxle from Reverse to Drive for 10 seconds.
- Shift transaxle back to Park (engine should remain running).
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove lower tube plug and discard.
- Perform the following procedure to assure proper fluid level:
- If oil drains down at a steady stream from opening, wait for it to stop.
- If oil does not drain down from opening, add oil to transaxle until it starts to drain at a steady stream. Then stop adding immediately.
- Install new lower tube plug, and wipe away any excess fluid from transaxle. Tighten lower tube pug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Lower vehicle.NOTE: DO NOT remove the lower tube assembly drain plug.
- Using scan tool, record TRANS FLUID TEMP.
- If TRANS FLUID TEMP is 68°F (20°) or below, add 0.5 Qt. (0.47L) of oil to transaxle.
- If TRANS FLUID TEMP is 104°F (40°C) add 0.75 Qt. (0.71L) of oil to transaxle.
- If TRANS FLUID TEMP is 140°F (60°C) add 1.0 Qt. (0.95L) of oil to transaxle.
- If TRANS FLUID TEMP is 176°F (80°C) add 1.25 Qts. (1.2L) of oil to transaxle.
- Turn engine vehicle.
