Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: DO NOT perform this diagnostic if no driveability condition exists, unless directed from another procedure.
NOTE: Search for applicable service bulletins before proceeding with diagnosis.
NOTE: DO NOT clear DTCs unless instructed by a diagnostic procedure.
NOTE: If there is a condition with the starting system, diagnose engine electrical system.
NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged, battery cables are clean and tight, and control module grounds are clean, tight, and in the proper location.
  1. Install scan tool. Does the scan tool power-up? If yes, go to next step. If no, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP in BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Attempt to establish communication with the control module. Does the scan tool communicate with control module? If yes, go to next step. If no, see SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. Attempt to start engine. Does the engine start and idle? If yes, go to next step. If no, go toNO-START DIAGNOSIS in BASIC DIAGNOSTICS - 2.2L & 3.0L VUE article.
  4. Select the DTC Information on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display any Powertrain DTCs? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7.
  5. With scan tool, save or capture the Powertrain DTC Information, Store Information, then go to next step.
  6. Does scan tool display DTC P0602, P1621, or P2610? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to next step.
  7. Is the customer's concern the automatic transmission? If yes, diagnose automatic transmission. See appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If no, go to next step.
  8. Is the customer's concern with Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing? If yes, go to INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE SYSTEM CHECK . If no, go to next step.
  9. Perform the applicable symptoms in SYMPTOMS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - 2.2L & 3.0L VUE article. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, system is okay. If no, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - 2.2L & 3.0L VUE article.
