Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS .
  2. Remove the fuel fill cap. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Observe the FTP with a scan tool. Is the FTP parameter within -1 to 1 in. H2O? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DTC P0451: EVAP FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR PERFORMANCE .
  3. Disconnect EVAP purge pipe from the EVAP canister purge solenoid. Install a hand-held vacuum gauge to the purge port on the EVAP purge solenoid. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge solenoid harness connector. Monitor the vacuum on the vacuum gauge. Start engine. Increase the engine speed to 1200-1500 RPM. Does the gauge indicate an increase in vacuum? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  4. Replace EVAP canister purge solenoid. After replacing solenoid, go to next step.
  5. Connect all EVAP hardware that was previously disconnected. Seal the EVAP system using the Purge/Seal function with a scan tool. Start the engine and idle at 1200-1500 RPM. Observe the FTP sensor parameter with a scan tool. Is the FTP parameter within -1 to 1 in. H2O? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  6. Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, diagnose affected DTC(s). See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
