DTC B0279: Right Air Temperature Door Actuator Travel Range Error

  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing system check, go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe MIN RIGHT TEMP DR POS and MAX RIGHT TEMP DR POS parameters in INSTRUMENT PANEL MODULE HVAC DOORS CALIBRATIONS data list. Subtract MIN RIGHT TEMP DR POS from MAX RIGHT TEMP DR POS. If result of the calculation indicates that actual travel of right air temperature door actuator is 147-220 counts, inspect wiring and connectors for intermittent loose wires and/or poor connections. Also check actuator for obstructions or overtravel condition. If result of the calculation indicates that actual travel of right air temperature door actuator is not between 147-220 counts, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect right air temperature door actuator harness connector. Check continuity in Brown wire between terminal No. 5 of right air temperature door actuator and ignition No. 3 fuse (10-amp) in rear fuse box (located under rear seat on driver's side). See Figure. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open or high resistance in Brown wire. Go to step  11.
  4. Check for voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (White/Black wire) of right air temperature door actuator harness connector. See Figure. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage between right air temperature door actuator and terminal A12 of Instrument Panel Module (IPM). Go to step  11. If voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect IPM harness connector C2. Check continuity in White/Black wire between terminal No. 6 of right air temperature door actuator and terminal A12 of IPM harness connector C2. See Figure and Figure . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open or high resistance in White/Black wire. Go to step  11.
  6. Check continuity in Gray wire between terminal No. 10 of right air temperature door actuator and terminal A1 of IPM harness connector C2. See Figure and Figure . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Gray wire. Go to step  11.
  7. Connect right air temperature door actuator and IPM. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe RIGHT TEMP DR ACTUAL data parameter in INSTRUMENT PANEL MODULE HVAC DOOR POSITIONS data list. Connect jumper wire between terminals No. 6 (White/Black wire) and terminal No. 10 (Gray wire) of right air temperature door actuator harness connector. See Figure. If right air temperature door actuator moves to full hot and counts change on scan tool, go to next step. If right air temperature door actuator does not move to full hot and/or counts do not change on scan tool, check for loose wires and/or poor connections at right air temperature door actuator. Repair as necessary and go to step  11. If wiring and connectors are okay, replace right air temperature door actuator. See AIR TEMPERATURE DOOR ACTUATORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  11.
  8. Connect 3-amp. fused jumper wire between terminals No. 6 (White/Black wire) and terminal No. 7 (Yellow wire) of right air temperature door actuator harness connector. See Figure. If right air temperature door actuator moves to full cold and counts change on scan tool, go to next step. If right air temperature door actuator does not move to full cold and/or counts do not change on scan tool, check for loose wires and/or poor connections at right air temperature door actuator. If wiring and connectors are okay, replace right air temperature door actuator. See AIR TEMPERATURE DOOR ACTUATORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  11.
  9. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (White/Black wire) of right air temperature door actuator harness connector. See Figure. Using scan tool, change right TEMP DOOR POSITION from COLD to HOT. If voltage moves toward zero volts when increasing temperature and moves toward 5 volts while decreasing temperature, and stays at 2.5 volts when stationary, go to next step. If voltage does not move toward zero volts when increasing temperature and/or does not move toward 5 volts while decreasing temperature, and/or does not stay at 2.5 volts when stationary, check for loose wires and/or poor connections at IPM. If wiring and connectors are okay, replace IPM. See INSTRUMENT PANEL MODULE (IPM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  11.
  10. Inspect right air temperature door and actuator for a misaligned air temperature door or actuator, broken or binding linkage, binding door, obstructions or missing seals. If air temperature door and actuator is okay, problem may have been caused by an intermittent actuator travel obstruction or overtravel condition. Go to step  11.
  11. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Operate vehicle and verify that DTCs do not reset. If DTCs reset, return to step  2. If DTCs do not reset, system is okay.
