DTC B0234: Left Air Temperature Door Actuator Travel Range Error

  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing system check, go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool and turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe MIN LEFT TEMP DOOR POS and MAX LEFT TEMP DOOR POS parameters in INSTRUMENT PANEL MODULE HVAC DOOR CALIBRATIONS data list. Subtract MIN LEFT TEMP DOOR POS counts from MAX LEFT TEMP DOOR POS counts. If result of the calculation indicates that actual travel of left air temperature door actuator is within 152-220 counts, inspect wiring and connectors for intermittent loose wires and/or poor connections. Also check actuator travel for obstructions or overtravel condition. If result of the calculation indicates that actual travel of left air temperature door actuator is not within 152-220 counts, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect left air temperature door actuator harness connector. Check Brown wire between terminal No. 5 of left air temperature door actuator and ignition No. 3 fuse (10-amp) in rear fuse box (located under rear seat on driver's side) for short to ground, open or high resistance. If condition was found and corrected, go to step  9. If condition was not found, go to next step.
  4. Check for open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (Dark Blue wire) of left air temperature door actuator harness connector. If condition was found and corrected, go to step  9. If condition did not exist, go to next step.
  5. Check for open, high resistance, short to ground or short to voltage between ground and terminal No. 10 (Gray wire) of left air temperature door actuator harness connector. If condition was found and corrected, go to step  9. If condition was not found, go to next step.
  6. Connect left air temperature door actuator and IPM. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe LEFT TEMP DR ACTUAL data parameter in INSTRUMENT PANEL MODULE HVAC DOOR POSITIONS data list. Connect 3-amp jumper wire between terminals No. 6 (Dark Blue wire) and terminal No. 10 (Gray wire) of left air temperature door actuator harness connector. Connect 3-amp jumper wire between terminals No. 6 (Dark Blue wire) and terminal No. 7 (Yellow wire) of left air temperature door actuator harness connector. If left air temperature door actuator rotates from full hot to full cold and counts change on scan tool, go to next step. If left air temperature door actuator does not move to full hot and/or counts do not change on scan tool, check for loose wires and/or poor connections at left air temperature door actuator. If wiring and connectors are okay, replace left air temperature door actuator. See AIR TEMPERATURE DOOR ACTUATORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  9.
  7. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (Dark Blue wire) of left air temperature door actuator harness connector. Using scan tool, command LEFT TEMP DOOR POSITION from COLD to HOT. If voltage moves toward 5 volts when increasing temperature and moves toward zero volts while decreasing temperature, and stays at 2.5 volts when stationary, go to next step. If voltage does not move toward 5 volts when increasing temperature and/or does not move toward zero volts while decreasing temperature, and/or does not stay at 2.5 volts when stationary, check for loose wires and/or poor connections at IPM. If wiring and connectors are okay, replace IPM. Recalibrate IPM. See INSTRUMENT PANEL MODULE (IPM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  9.
  8. Inspect left air temperature door and actuator for a misaligned air temperature door or actuator, broken or binding linkage, binding door, obstructions or missing seals. Repair as needed. Go to step  9. If air temperature door and actuator is okay, problem may have been caused by an intermittent actuator travel obstruction or overtravel condition.
  9. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Operate vehicle and verify that DTCs do not reset. If DTCs reset, return to step  2. If DTCs do not reset, system is okay.
