Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Observe the DTC information. Are DTCs P1120, P1220 or P1221 also set? If yes, go to DTC P1120: THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR NO. 1 CIRCUIT , DTC P1220: THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR NO. 2 CIRCUIT  or DTC P1221: FUEL PUMP SECONDARY CIRCUIT - LOW  . If no, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Visually inspect the throttle body for throttle valves that are NOT in the rest position, throttle valves that are binding open or closed, or throttle valves that are free to move open or closed WITHOUT spring pressure. Did you find any of these conditions with the throttle body? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  4. NOTE: Disconnecting the throttle body connector will cause additional DTCs to set.
  5. Disconnect the throttle body connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Measure the voltage of the TAC motor control 1 and TAC motor control 2 circuits of the throttle actuator motor with a DVOM connected to ground. Is the voltage greater than 11 volts for both circuits? If yes, go to step  8. If no, go to next step.
  6. Is the voltage less than 2 volts? If yes, go to step  7. If no, go to next step.
  7. Test TAC motor control circuit that measured greater than 2 volts for a short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to step  8.
  8. Test TAC motor control circuit that measured less than 2 volts for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to step  10.
  9. Test TAC motor control 1 and TAC motor control 2 circuits for high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to next step.
  10. Test for a poor connection or terminal tension at the throttle body connector. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to step  11.
  11. Test for a poor connection or terminal tension at the ECM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to step  12.
  12. Replace throttle body assembly. After replacing throttle body, go to step  13.
  13. Turn ignition off. Replace ECM. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE REPROGRAMMING  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing ECM, go to next step.
  14. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Operate vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate vehicle within the conditions observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to step  2. If no, go to next step.
  15. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
