Pinion Yoke & Pinion Seal: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 GMC Sierra, 2002 GMC Savana Special, and 2002 GMC Savana Camper Special. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise vehicle and support. Allow rear axle housing assembly to hang free. Accurately mark all driveline components, relative to drive shaft and axles, for installation reference. Remove drive shaft from pinion yoke. Using INCH lbs. torque wrench, measure the amount of torque required to rotate the pinion. Record this measurement for reassembly. This will give the combined preload for the pinion bearings, pinion pilot bearing and pinion oil seal.
  2. Hold pinion yoke with Pinion Yoke Holder/Remover (J-8614-01). See Fig 1 . Remove pinion self-locking nut and washer (if equipped) from yoke. Remove pinion yoke from axle carrier using special nut and forcing screw of pinion yoke holder/remover. Remove pinion oil seal from axle carrier.
