Installation (Front)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Whenever the brake rotor has been separated from the wheel bearing flange, clean any rust or foreign material from the mating surface of the rotor and flange with the Hub Cleaning Kit (J-42450). Failure to do this may result in increased lateral runout of the rotor and brake pulsation.
  1. Use the Wheel Hub Resurfacing Kit (J-42450-A) to clean all rust and contaminants from the mating surface of the hub flange.
  2. Use the Rotor Resurfacing Kit (J-41013) to clean all rust and contaminants from the inside diameter of the hat section of the brake rotor to prevent any foreign material from getting between the brake rotor and the hub flange.
    NOTE: If the rotor was removed using the jack screw method you must ensure that the hub flange is free of nicks or marks caused by this procedure. Remove all raised nicks or marks before installing the rotor.
  3. Align the rotor to its original position on the hub, if applicable, and install the rotor. See Figure.
  4. Install the caliper and caliper mounting bracket assembly.
  5. Perform the following procedure before installing the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts:
    • Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch.
    • Clean the threads of the bolt with brake parts cleaner or the equivalent and allow to dry.
    • Apply Threadlocker (GM P/N 12345493) to the threads of the bolt.
  6. Install the caliper bracket mounting bolts. Tighten the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  7. On dual wheel vehicles, install the front wheel hub extension.
    • Insert a drift or large screwdriver through the brake caliper into one of the brake rotor vanes in order to prevent the rotor from turning.
    • Align and install the front wheel hub extension to the original position on the hub.
      NOTE: Follow the same tightening sequence for the front wheel hub extension that is used on an eight lug wheel.
    • Install the front wheel hub extension nuts. Tighten the front wheel hub extension nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  8. On all vehicles, install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Lower the vehicle.
  9. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  10. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  11. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps  9 and  10 until a firm pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  12. Fill the master cylinder reservoir to the proper level with clean brake fluid. See MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR FILLING  under BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM.
