Section 256 (Drive Axles - Except Full Floating Axle): Description

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 21 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 GMC Sonoma, 2002 GMC Sierra, and 2002 GMC Savana Special. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Drive axle assembly is hypoid gear type with integral carrier housing. See Fig 1. This type assembly is used on light-duty emission vehicles with semi-floating axles. Differential side bearing preload adjustment and drive pinion depth adjustment are made by using shims. Pinion bearing preload is made with a collapsible spacer. A removable differential cover permits inspection and minor servicing of differential without removing axle assembly from vehicle. Some models are equipped with a locking differential.
