Backlash & Final Assembly
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 21 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 GMC Sonoma, 2002 GMC Sierra, and 2002 GMC Savana Special. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Rotate pinion and differential case several times to seat bearings. Using a dial indicator mounted to axle housing, check ring gear backlash at 4 different teeth locations around ring gear. Install indicator in line with gear rotation and perpendicular to tooth angle.
- Ensure pinion flange is locked in position or held rigid while taking each backlash reading. Four backlash readings should not vary more than .002" (.05 mm).
- Total backlash reading should be .003-.010" (.08-.25 mm). If backlash is incorrect, adjust side bearing shims as necessary. After backlash adjustment is completed, perform gear tooth contact pattern check. See GEAR TOOTH CONTACT PATTERNS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
- If pattern is incorrect, adjust pinion or ring gear as required. Install axle shafts, "C" locks, pinion shaft and lock bolt. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install rear housing cover and add gear oil. See LUBRICATION .
NOTE:
DO NOT change total shim pack thickness for each side bearing. If a shim is removed from one side, add same thickness shim to other side.
